Three foundries recently upgraded their sand mixers with DISA’s SMC (Sand Multi Controller) as part of Equipment Modernisation Programmes (EMPs). More than 10 foundries have recently chosen this upgrade. Delivered by DISA, the EMPs aimed to improve sand mix quality and stability to deliver lower scrap and finishing costs.
Adding an SMC enhances the performance of batch mixers made by DISA and other manufacturers. The SMC monitors each sand batch and controls water addition, ensuring that the moulding sand’s properties stay very close to the desired values. Operators simply select the correct sand recipe from the user-friendly interface.
“Inconsistent, out-of-tolerance green sand causes all sorts of casting quality problems like sand inclusions, porosity and shrinkage,” says Bernard Kuai, Senior Service Manager for DISA Sand Plant. “The SMC measures critical properties like sand compressibility and automatically adds water to keep the sand mix correct, even when temperatures or humidity change in the foundry. Adding this precise, in-line laboratory testing and control can have a big effect on scrap rates.”
